Pikes Peak, Colorado

"What is that mountain goat doing way up here in the clouds?"
--Gary Larson, in a well-known 'Fardside'cartoon

July 2007 -- Pikes Peak, Colorado

We started out our afternoon with an unimaginably spacious (and free!) campspot along the road.

When starting from the Crags Campground trailhead these pipes have significance as a landmark for finding the real trail. It would be funny to add an RV-7A exhaust pipe someday and see if anyone notices.

This early part of the trail may look easy, but it ended up being nothing short of a real thigh burner!

Finally, we top out on that first hill. We're now headed to that big pile of dirt just behind our heads.

We've just passed Devil's playground.

A couple of hours later we arrive (it feels so good to sit down on this bench!)

The visitor's center at the top provides some great views of Colorado Springs and neighboring mountains. (But our time is short - those clouds are coming in quick!)

This was the mountain that inspired "America the Beautiful", the words of which are on this monument. (This lady behind me has no idea she's going to be on some weird airplane-building website - bwa ha ha ha!)

One last look before we head back down.

"Weird pipe-looking-thing - I have never been so happy to see you! I'm kaput.....Z-z-z-z-z-z-z..."
