WINGS - 4
"I'm beginning to see why airplanes are so expensive."
--- A typical first-time builder.
Aileron Construction
Below are a
few images taken from the construction of the ailerons (both ailerons, mixed.)
Prior to construction,
all parts are primed.
Spars and ribs are
match-drilled.
Adding the bottom skin
...
The piano hinge is added
on. Note how much has to be removed. I'll save this for when I build a
piano.
Bad rivets are marked
for drilling.
Match-drilling and
clecoeing the top skin to the assembly.
Before and after attaching the
skins to the ribs...
Touch-ups of primer are
required on the counter-balance rod.
Assembly of the front
edge of the aileron begins...
More riveting...
The front edge is now
pinned to the rest, ready for match-drilling.
Needing to dimple these
odd holes that can't be dimpled using the conventional squeezer or
c-frame, we used a plum-bob and a hammer.
The counterbalance is
finally pop-riveted in place.
Pop-rivets gradually
disappear...
...they cannot disappear
fast enough! Grrr!
No aileron would be
complete without push rods...
Now a little less like
Sputnik and a lot more like an airplane part.
More parts for the push
rods...
This completes the
assembly of the ailerons!
